How Many Questions Are on the Security+ Exam?

The CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 exam contains a maximum of 90 questions. The actual number you receive may vary between 80 and 90, depending on the mix of question types in your particular exam form.

Questions come in two formats: multiple-choice (single and multi-select) and performance-based questions (PBQs). PBQs are interactive simulations that test hands-on skills, such as configuring a firewall rule, analyzing a network diagram, or matching security concepts to scenarios. Expect 3-5 PBQs, typically at the beginning of the exam.

You get 90 minutes to complete all questions. That works out to about 1 minute per question, so time management is critical. Many test-takers recommend flagging PBQs and returning to them after finishing the multiple-choice section. Practice under timed conditions to build comfort with the pace.
