What Order Should I Get CompTIA Certifications?

The recommended CompTIA certification path is: A+ → Network+ → Security+ → CySA+ (or PenTest+ for offensive security). Each certification builds on the knowledge from the previous one, creating a logical progression from IT fundamentals to cybersecurity specialization.

A+ covers hardware, software, and basic troubleshooting. Network+ adds networking depth (routing, switching, protocols). Security+ layers security concepts on top of your IT and networking foundation. CySA+ deepens into threat detection and incident response for analyst roles.

However, you can skip certifications based on your experience. If you already work in IT support, skip A+ and start with Network+. If you have networking experience, jump to Security+. Many career changers targeting cybersecurity start directly with Security+ and study networking concepts alongside it. The key factor is whether you have enough foundational knowledge to understand the exam material without the preceding certification.
