SecuSpark 2.0 — The Guilds Update: Cert Prep Just Became a Multiplayer RPG
Guilds with living pixel forts, a real-time PvP arena, an earn-only Embers economy, PenTest+ as a fifth cert path, FSRS flashcards, and every screen rebuilt. The biggest SecuSpark release ever, explained.

A month ago, SecuSpark was a study app with a battle mode. Today it is a different thing entirely: you don’t use it anymore, you play it. Every real exam question you answer is now a hit you land on a pixel boss, a duel you win against a live opponent, an Ember you forge into gear, or a brick in your study guild’s fortress. This is the biggest release in SecuSpark’s history, and this post is the whole story. The short version lives on the new changelog.

Guilds: Your Studying Builds a Fort Now
The headline. Guilds are a study-powered strategy layer where the resource you farm is exam mastery. Every correct answer you lock in powers your guild’s keep — fund buildings, expand the walls, watch a hand-drawn pixel fort grow because you and your guildmates kept showing up to study.
Around the fort is a fog-shrouded world map. You scout it, march on it, and team up to take down threat factions before the season-ending boss Citadel starts its doom clock. There are seasons with a world boss and relic captures, a deed feed so you can see what your guildmates just did, guild chat, weekly goals, duo quests, trials, and medals. Season 1 starts with this release.
The anti-toxic war game
I made one design decision early and I’m not budging on it: you cannot lose what you built. Ever. Nobody raids your fort while you sleep. Sieges replay a frozen snapshot of the defender’s fort — attackers get the thrill, defenders lose nothing. Clash-style loss aversion is great for engagement metrics and terrible for people trying to pass an exam. SecuSpark’s version keeps the strategy and deletes the anxiety.
And if you’re a lone wolf: guildless players get the full season experience solo. No squad required.
The PvP Live Arena: Duel a Real Human, Live
SecuSpark already had asynchronous PvP — you could attack a snapshot of another player’s character. Now there’s a real-time arena: two players, the same exam questions, simultaneously. The faster correct answer hits harder. Panic-clicking the wrong answer fast earns you nothing, which is exactly how it should work when the skill being tested is knowing your ports and protocols.
It’s ranked. Your ELO is a number that reflects how well you actually know the material, and the ladder is server-verified with anti-cheat hardening — answers are scored server-side, suspicious timing gets flagged, and the leaderboard is one you can actually trust. There’s a live invite flow, so you can challenge a friend or a stranger and see who’s online right now.

Embers: One Currency You Can Only Earn
The old Sparks currency is now Embers, and the rename comes with a philosophy: you cannot buy Embers. Not now, not ever. Every right answer mints them. The only way to get richer in SecuSpark is to get smarter, which is the entire point of the app.
To give those Embers somewhere to go, the Quartermaster is open — a personal gear shop where the loot your studying earned turns into weapons, armor, and cosmetics for your character. PvP now mints Embers into your personal wallet too, guild or no guild. You can’t buy a right answer, and now you can’t buy a better sword either.
PenTest+ Makes Five Cert Paths
PenTest+ (PT0-003) is live — 552 questions and 24 hand-drawn offensive-security bosses, joining Security+, A+, Network+, and CySA+. That’s 7,500+ practice questions across 7 certs, and there are no prerequisites between paths — every account can study any cert, switch any time, and keep one character across all of them.
The Readiness Predictor also got honest for every path: weighted domain accuracy tuned per cert, so you know whether you’d pass before you book the $439 exam voucher.
Flashcards, Rebuilt: Open the App, It Knows What to Study
Flashcards got torn down and rebuilt on FSRS, the modern spaced-repetition scheduler. The centerpiece is Today’s Drill — a daily plan sized to finish in about 15 minutes, not a 400-card wall of guilt. The battle generates your cards for you: wrong answers become tomorrow’s review deck automatically, with a smart throttle so a bad battle doesn’t bury you, and an overdue drain so a vacation doesn’t turn into a backlog you’re scared to open.
Play the game. The flashcards make themselves.
Every Screen, Rebuilt Warm
The whole app moved off the cold, mono-blue, “an AI made this” look and onto a warm Guild Hall aesthetic — wood and parchment surfaces, hand-carved relief edges, a hearth-lit world. Every authenticated screen was reskinned by hand, each cert tints its world its own color, and there’s a new three-font system: a real RPG display face for the big moments, a clean sans for everything you actually read, a dedicated mono for the numbers.
The homepage got the same treatment plus one trick I’m proud of: it’s playable. You can fight a boss with real exam questions before you ever create an account. Most study sites show you a screenshot; ours hands you the controller.
Faster, Smoother, More Honest
- Performance and accessibility: faster loads, reduced-motion support everywhere, screen-reader headings across authed surfaces, and a production hydration bug fixed.
- Sharper battles: enemy HP in the HUD, a Flee button that banks the damage you already dealt, clearer results screens.
- Sprite QA: corrected facings across the bestiary, so your enemies actually look at you when they menace you.
The Part Where I Ask You Something
A release this big is going to have rough edges, and I want to hear about every one of them. There’s a new “Give feedback” button in your account menu — it takes sixty seconds, I read every single submission personally, and the first one earns you +50 Embers. The best ideas end up on the changelog’s “You said, we did” board, because the roadmap has always moved on what players ask for. The energy fix, PenTest+, Today’s Drill — all of those started as user messages.
What Is Next
- Epic and legendary gear in the Quartermaster: the top rarity tiers exist in the vault and are being wired into drops and the shop.
- More cert paths: ISC2 CC and Linux+ are scaffolded and queued behind PenTest+.
- Season 2: Season 1’s rollover is already built — what fills it depends on how Season 1 goes and what you tell me.
Your account, character, XP, loot, and streaks all carried over untouched — this release only adds. Guilds and Season 1 are coming soon.
